Pink Ribbon Blues Campaign
Jane Shulman
BCAM debuted the Pink Ribbon Blues workshop at the World Conference on Breast Cancer in June, garnering a news report from CBC radio and positive responses from a number of
attendees. Madeleine Bird developed th workshop based on the research for BCAM which she did as an intern for the McGill Centre for Research & Teaching on Women.
Madeleine's report and workshop include an in-depth explanation of cause marketing, the process by which corporations raise their profile and increase sales by partnering with foundations for fundraising initiatives. She also provides examples of double-dealing, where corporations benefit from aligning themselves with breast cancer causes, while simultaneously producing carcinogens that may cause breast cancer. BCAM has produced a card outlining these principles, encouraging consumers to "think before they pink".
We will be launching the Pink Ribbon Blues Campaign at the BCAM Annual General Meeting on Thursday, Sept. 22nd. Madeleine will present the workshop, and we will distribute the Pink Ribbon Blues cards and outline the elements of the campaign.
